  1. It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the destiny of turbulent love affairs. Doctor Juvenal Urbino sensed it as soon as he entered the darkened house, arriving urgently to investigate a case that for him had ceased to be urgent many years ago. The Antillean refugee Jeremiah de Saint-Amour, disabled war veteran, photographer of children, and his most sympathetic adversary in chess, had escaped the torments of memory with a vapor of gold cyanide.

Diferente a turbulento.

  3. It was inevitable: the odor of the acrid almonds always reminded him of the fate of contradicted lovers. Doctor Juvenal Urbino had perceived it since he entered in the house yet in shadow, where he had urgently showed up to investigate a case that had for him ceased to be urgent many years ago. The Caribbean refugee Jeremiah de Saint-Amour, invalid from war, children's photographer and his most compassionate chess rival, had put himself in safety from the torments of memory with the aromatic smoke of gold cyanide.

    1. OJO: amores contrariados no AMANTES (lovers) contrariados...

Parece que amores contrariados es un problema!!! Os gusta "unrequited love"??? Una de las traducciones oficiales:

It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love. Dr. Juvenal Urbino noticed it as soon as he entered the still darkened house where he had hurried on an urgent call to attend a case that for him had lost all urgency many years before. The Antillean refugee Jeremiah de Saint-Amour, disabled war veteran, photographer of children, and his most sympathetic opponent in chess, had escaped the torments of memory with the aromatic fumes of gold cyanide.
